Born and raised multilingual in the Centovalli region of Ticino, Switzerland. Mona owes her love of botany and the natural form to the rural environment she lived in as a child and to her mother’s teachings. Her father, theater set designer Peter Bissegger, also influenced her in terms of spatial imagination and concern with a physical environment’s influence on human emotions and vitality.
Mona briefly studied English literature at the University of Zurich before relocating to San Francisco. She studied illustration at the Academy of Art University, graduating with honors from the school’s BFA program. In recent years, as a spin-off from her Weeds projects, she had delved more intensely into artwork that combines painting with photography.
